On Thursday, July 10, the bag sold for a record-breaking €8.6 million (equivalent to $10 million) by Sotheby’s in an online sale, becoming the most expensive handbag to ever sell at auction - and fans are convinced Kardashian was the highest bidder.

On Saturday, July 11, Kardashian shared a video on her Instagram story that featured an AI-version of her breaking a glass case containing the original Birkin bag inspired by the late actress and model Jane Birkin. The video, which was posted by AI meme account RickDick, was captioned, "birKIM."

Kardashian followed up the post with a series of texts from various people, all wondering if she had purchased the iconic status symbol.
"Are u the winner of the first Birkin bag?" one text read.
"Please tell me you bought that Birkin," another friend said. "Would be BAD ASS."
"Did you buy Jane Birkin's birkin?!!?" someone asked with a crying emoji.
"Kim for real did you buy the original Birkin??? Or should I stop blaming you every time I lose an auction?" another text read.
The last text Kardashian posted read, "Okay tell me the truth, did you buy the Birkin or not?"
Despite the rampant speculation, the bag went to a private collector from Japan, who placed their bid through Maiko Ichikawa, Country Head of Sotheby’s Japan. The identity of the buyer is currently unknown.
The reported that the auction began at $1 million and the bag had bids placed in person and via phone. The next three highest bids were for €6.2 million, $6.5 million and $6.8 million.
Along with Kardashian, Jeff Bezos' wife, Lauren Sanchez, was also rumored to be a bidder.
