Mychal Threets is the internet’s librarian. With a welcoming smile, a signature afro, and visible tattoos of Where the Wild Things Are monsters, the 35-year-old creator doesn’t resemble the stereotypical image of a stern, shushing librarian—and that’s exactly the point. To his 1.6 million followers across TikTok and Instagram, Threets is a joyful advocate for literacy and inclusivity, reminding audiences that libraries are for everyone, library cards are cool, and what happens in the stacks makes for great stories.
A former librarian at the same Northern California branch he visited as a kid, Threets stepped away from his role at Solano County Library in 2024, but his mission hasn’t changed. This year, he launched a mental health-focused podcast, Thoughts About Feelings, co-hosted with fellow creator Blair Imani Ali, and his debut picture book, I'm So Happy You're Here: A Celebration of Library Joy, is slated for release in February 2026. Many see Threets as a cultural descendant of LeVar Burton, nurturing audiences’ passion for books like Burton did with Reading Rainbow.
